Preview: No. 8 Lady Saints play final home game of calendar year

LIBERAL, Kan. – The road has not been a friendly place for the No. 8 Seward County women's basketball team, but luckily, the Lady Saints return to the Greenhouse for their final home game of the 2017 calendar year at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday when they host the Allen Red Devils.

Seward (7-2, 5-2) is coming off a road loss to Coffeyville, losing to the Red Ravens on a buzzer beater, 64-61.  The Lady Saints shot a season low 32.8 percent in the game, including just 22.6 percent from behind the arc. Mollie Mounsey scored just four points in the game, snapping her 42-game streak of scoring in the double-digits.

Mounsey leads the Lady Saints in scoring with 16.1 points/game and is currently fourth in the KJCCC in scoring. Freshman Lexi Hernandez has come on strong as of late scoring in the double-figures in four straight games.  Over the four-game span, she is shooting 45 percent from the field, while averaging 12.8 points per game.

The Lady Saints have two other players scoring at least eight points a game this season – Vanessa Caro (8.0) and Vilma Covane (8.7).

On the defensive side, Mounsey (2.1 steals/game) and Silvia Veloso (2.4 steals/game) lead Seward in takeaways, while Carla Covane comes away with one block per game.

Allen (3-8, 1-6) enters the game with a four-game losing streak.  They have lost every road-game this season, with losses to Labette, Neosho County, Garden City and Barton. Their lone conference win came at home against Colby, when they beat the Trojans 71-57.

The Red Devils are led by sophomore guard Kamri Summons who is averaging 12.7 points/game and is shooting 57.5 percent from the field, including 46.2 percent from behind the arc. Tamera Shaver is also averaging double-figures with 11.6 points/game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field.

Seward has won 11 straight games against the Red Devils, dating back to Dec. 2, 1995.  Allen has never defeated the Lady Saints in the Greenhouse, coming in with an 0-6 record in Liberal.  The only three wins for the Red Devils came on a neutral court in 1987, 1989 and 1992. Seward won last year's Greenhouse game 78-59 and leads the all-time series 11-3.
