Lady Saints Set Three Point Record in Win Over Neosho

Lady Saints Set Three Point Record in Win Over Neosho

A wing three from Brennyn Seagler early in the second half of Seward County's 86-57 win over Neosho County Wednesday night in Chanute seemed like just another triple from the nations #5 ranked team. But, it came with much more historical significance than that as once the ball touched the bottom of the nylon, the Lady Saints were the new all-time record holders for three pointers made in a season with 251, despite still having four regular season games left on their 2016-2017 schedule.

The Lady Saints got out to a characteristically good start, starting the game on top of Neosho 6-2 before pushing their advantage to 16-4 later in the first quarter.  Neosho finally got things going in the final three minutes of the period, but didn't have an answer to slow the Seward attack as a late three by Erin Richardson gave the Lady Saints a comfortable 24-11 lead going into the break.

As they often do, Seward got their stroke going from the outside, getting threes from Mollie Mounsey, Valerie Caro, and Brennyn Seagler to stretch their lead to 19 at 41-22.  A three from Caro's twin sister Vanessa put Seward up 23 and the Lady Saints went to the break with their largest lead of the first half as they were doubling up the Panthers after 20 minutes of action 52-26.

A Mounsey three early in the third quarter made it a 29 point game and after a Neosho bucket, Seagler connected on a three for the Lady Saints to not only give them their first 30 point lead of the night, but also to break the all-time school record for threes made in a season by a Seward team with 251, breaking the "Magnificent 7's" 2007 mark.  Other than that though, the third was a forgettable one for the Lady Saints who were outscored by Neosho 19-14 to make it a 66-45 game after three.

Seward did their work inside the arc to begin the fourth quarter and quickly ballooned their lead back out to 30 as Alex Tyson scored in the paint midway through the period.  Seward's defense then held Neosho without a single point for nearly four minutes in the fourth to put the game away before eventually finishing off an 86-57 win.

Mounsey again led the Lady Saints with 24 points and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds while also collecting 6 assists.  Seagler pitched in 14 for Seward while the Caro twins combined for 18 off the Lady Saints bench.

Seward picks up their 25th win of the season with the victory, improving to 25-1 overall and 21-1 in Jayhawk Conference play where they keep pace with Hutchinson atop the standings.  Neosho falls to 9-17 overall and 6-16 in league play, all but ending their hopes for a home playoff game in the upcoming Region VI Tournament.

Seward returns home Saturday night to take on Independence on Homecoming night in the Greenhouse.  The Lady Saints and Lady Pirates will tip things off at 6:00 with Homecoming festivities to take place immediately after the game.  Free tickets are available courtesy of our buyout sponsor Pizza Hut at any of their Liberal locations.
