Lady Saints Earn Big Win at Coffeyville

Lady Saints Earn Big Win at Coffeyville

Wrapping up their toughest stretch of their 2016-2017 season, the #6 Seward County Lady Saints came ready to play Wednesday night in Coffeyville, cooling off the red hot Red Ravens with an 83-76 victory in Nellis Hall to take a huge step forward in their push to claim a Jayhawk Conference Championship at the end of the month.

As they did the first time the two went head to head earlier this season in the Greenhouse, the Red Ravens were hot from the outside early on, using a trio of three pointers to jump out to an 11-6 lead on the Lady Saints.  Coffeyville pushed their lead to six later in the quarter before four straight points from Manuela Fungate and a late free throw from Neidy Ocuane trimmed the Raven lead to just two at 15-13 after one.

Just when it looked like the Lady Saints were working their way back into the game, a 7-0 Coffeyville run to begin the second, quickly pushed the Ravens out to their biggest lead of the game at 22-13. A three from Erin Richardson and another from Mollie Mounsey quickly got Seward back in it and spurred a 16-2 Lady Saints run to put them in front 29-24 with 2:55 left to go in the first half.  After Coffeyville cut the Seward lead back to one, five straight points from Mounsey in the final 1:55 staked the Lady Saints to a 34-28 advantage as the two went to the locker rooms at half.

Four quick points by Seward to begin the third quarter pushed the Lady Saints lead to double digits at 38-28.  An answer from the Ravens stopped a 9-0 Seward run and started Coffeyville on an 18-2 burst of their own to erase the Lady Saints advantage and take a 46-40 lead midway through the quarter.  Seward remained within striking distance and got threes from Richardson and Mounsey once again to tie the game at 49 with 3:07 left in the period.  A deep three from Ocuane put Seward back in front and four straight from Fungate to end the quarter gave the Lady Saints a 58-53 lead after three.

A pair of early threes in the fourth for Coffeyville trimmed the Seward lead to just two, but a big answer from Mounsey from deep got the Lady Saints back on track and started them on a 10-1 run to give them their biggest lead of the game at 75-64.  The Ravens picked up the pace and caused some confusion for Seward, allowing them to cut the Seward lead back down to five with under a minute to play, but a pair of late free throws by Ocuane sealed the deal for the Lady Saints as they hung on to win 83-76.

Once again, Seward got contributions from all over their lineup in the victory.  Mounsey led the team with a game high 24 points while Joanna Grymek added 17 points and 9 rebounds.  Fungate chalked up her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Richardson just missed her first career double-double with 10 points and a career best 9 assists.

Seward improves to 23-1 on the season with the victory and bumps their Jayhawk Conference record to 19-1 where they remain in a first place tie with Hutchinson.  Coffeyville loses for just the second time in their past 13 games as they fall to 16-7 overall and 15-5 in Jayhawk Conference action.

The Lady Saints schedule will get considerably lighter for the final three weeks of the regular season as they will not face a single team with a winning record down the home stretch.

Seward returns home on Saturday night to take on Allen in the Greenhouse at 6:00 with free tickets available courtesy of our buyout sponsor Community Bank at their Liberal location as well as at Hutch's in North Liberal.
