Shorthanded Lady Saints Have No Problem With Allen

Playing without two of their top three scorers due to injury Wednesday night, the #8 Seward County Lady Saints didn't miss a beat, topping the Allen Red Devils 79-49 on a snowy night in Iola to improve to 10-0 on the year.

It was an interesting strategy from the Red Devils early on as they left reining NJCAA National Player of the Week Mollie Mounsey open on the outside and watched as she buried three three pointers in the first 1:30 of the contest to push Seward out a 9-2 lead.  The Lady Saints continued their roll, stretching their advantage to eight moments later on a steal and score from Erin Richardson before a long ball from Neidy Ocuane put Seward in front 24-11 after one quarter of action.

Seward scored the first five of the second quarter to push their lead to 18 at 29-11 but just when it looked like they were in complete control, the Lady Saints hit a wall.  Seward scored just three points in the final 7:45 of the half while watching Allen go on a 21-3 run to tie the score up at 32 after 20 minutes of action.

The halftime break was just what the doctor ordered for the Lady Saints as they quickly came out in the second half and took the lead back, wasting no time in stretching it back to nine at 50-41. Later in the third Ocuane found Manuela Fungate in the paint for an easy two to give Seward a 57-42 lead into the fourth.

It was all Seward in the fourth as the Lady Saints ballooned their lead to 20 midway through the quarter before cruising to a 79-48 victory at the final horn.

It was a workman like performance for the Lady Saints as they shot 45% on the night and held Allen to just 33% shooting and seven second half field goals.  While Mounsey led Seward with 24 points on the night, it was the performances of a number of other Lady Saints that helped pick up the slack with Clitan de Sousa and Joanna Grymek's 35 points per game out of the lineup.  Four different Seward players scored season highs in the win including Ocuane who put up 16, Brennyn Seagler who scored 13 and Richardson and Fungate who each had 10.  On top of her 10 points, Fungate also corralled a career high 17 rebounds in the win, the 8th most in a single game for a Lady Saint in school history.

Seward improves to 10-0 overall and 8-0 in Jayhawk Conference play with the win while Allen drops to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in league action.

Next up for the Lady Saints is a home date with Neosho County Saturday night to wrap up the first semester of play.  Seward and Neosho will tip at 6:00 in the Greenhouse with free tickets available courtesy of our buyout sponsor McDonald's at either of their Liberal locations.  Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used stuffed animal to the Greenhouse for the game to participate in the inaugural 'Teddy Bear Toss' at halftime of the Lady Saints game where fans will toss their stuffed animal onto center court to be collected by the Saints Cheerleaders to be distributed to a local charity for Christmas presents for the less fortunate.
