Lady Saints Go Ice Cold in Concordia

Lady Saints Go Ice Cold in Concordia

You can call is rust, you can call it bus legs, or anything else that you want, but the #22 Seward County Lady Saints couldn't find the basket Saturday night on the road at Cloud County as they were limited to just 22% shooting on the night and 38 points, their least amount of points in over nine seasons as they fell to the homestanding Lady T-Birds 53-38 in a disappointing night in Bryant Gymnasium in Concordia.

The start of the game was a sign of things to come for Seward and Cloud Saturday night as they combined for just four field goals in the first six minutes of the game with the Lady Saints getting out to a 6-5 lead.  Things picked up as the first quarter came to a close and it was the T-Birds holding a two point, 15-13 advantage after one.

The Lady Saints struggled mightily in the second quarter of action, going the final 7:22 without a field goal while scoring just four points in the quarter to fall behind the T-Birds 25-17 at the break.  Seward shot just 19% in the half and had 14 turnovers compared to just 7 first half field goals.

Halftime adjustments did the Lady Saints well in the third quarter as they came out of the locker room scoring the first five points of the period to make it a three point game and moments later Erin Richardson connected from downtown to tie the game at 27.  But another drought, this one of 4:00 with just one basket put the Lady Saints back down by four, 34-30 as the teams headed to the fourth and final quarter of action.

The lid on the Lady Saints basket continued in the fourth quarter as they attempted a comeback while Cloud's hoop widened a bit.  The T-Birds stretched their lead to nine early in the quarter and with a 5:05 stretch without a single point for the Lady Saints, Seward found themselves in their biggest hole of the night, down 51-34 with 2:44 to go.  A late three finally gave Seward fans something to cheer about, but it was far too little too late as Cloud County walked away with a 53-38 win over the Lady Saints.

The final stat sheet was ugly on both sides as Cloud shot 29% with 20 field goals and 21 turnovers in the winning effort while the Lady Saints shot just 22% with 15 field goals and 23 turnovers on the night.  Outside of Clitan de Sousa who led the Lady Saints with a career high 17 points, Seward shot just 7 of 51 from the field, a mark of just 13%.  No other starter but de Sousa scored more than 4 points for the Lady Saints as they combined to go 4 for 30 from the field.

The loss drops Seward to 16-7 overall and 8-5 in Jayhawk Conference play while Cloud remains hot on the Lady Saints heels as they improve to 17-9 overall and 9-6 in league action.

Seward won't have much time to dwell on the loss as they host #7 Hutchinson Wednesday night in the Greenhouse for a 6:00 tip.  Free tickets are available courtesy of our buyout sponsor First National Bank, at any of their Liberal locations.
