50! Seward's Daniela Galindo Makes School History in Blowout

It was a record breaking night Saturday night in the Greenhouse on Hispanic Heritage Night as Seward County sophomore Daniela Galindo exploded for a school record 50 points while hitting a school record 10 three pointers in a 126-36 Lady Saints route over the University of the Southwest.

The Lady Saints got out to a quick start against the Mustangs, grabbing a 15-2 lead after an offensive rebound and score from Joanna Grymek midway through the first quarter.  However, Southwest got their game going at that point and after one it was just a seven point game, 22-15 in favor of the Lady Saints.

Little did anyone in the crowd know that the second quarter would be one that Lady Saints fans wouldn't soon forget.  Seward came out of the break scoring 15 points in just 2:14, getting 11 straight points from Daniela Galindo to take a 37-15 lead.  Galindo continued her red hot stretch, picking up a seven point burst on her own moments later before an Axelle Bernard finish on the inside gave the Lady Saints a 50-18 lead.  The back court pressure of Tiani White and Galindo continued to give the Mustangs fits as Southwest was rarely able to get the ball past half court without the Lady Saints stealing it away and taking possession.  Galindo scored seven more points before the half to finish the quarter with 27 points and end the first half with an unthinkable 34 points as the Lady Saints led 68-19 at the halftime break.

Seward finished the first half shooting 53% from the field and drained eight of 17 from the three point line, good for 47%.  Southwest shot just 24% and managed to get up just 25 field goal attempts because of 27 Seward forced turnovers.

Galindo's onslaught continued after the break as the sophomore hit three pointer number seven and then number eight to tie the school's all-time record for longballs in a game while putting herself just one point away from tying the school record for single game points with 40.  After being unselfish with an assist to Grymek to put Seward ahead 84-21 midway through the third, Galindo made history, driving and scoring for her 41st and 42nd point to set the all-time record.  Galindo came out of the game as the Lady Saints went to their bench to extend the lead to 99-30 after three quarters of play, but that isn't all that Seward fans would hear of her.

With the record behind her, Galindo opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws to give her 44 and then drilled back to back threes to give her an even 50 points for the game as well as breaking the single game three pointers made record with 10.  With the mid-century mark hit, Seward Head Coach Toby Wynn figured that was enough for Galindo, lifting her from the game to a roaring ovation from her home crowd.  Seward went on to win 126-36 over the Mustangs, marking their most points scored in a game since the 1998 season.

While there were a handful of mindblowing numbers that came out of the game, the most obvious was the historic performance by Galindo.  She finished the game with an even 50 points, shattering Rachel Barnes' former school record of 41 in a game, while hitting the 10 three pointers, two more than any other player in school history had ever had.  Behind the scenes, Bernard had her fourth double-double in four games with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Saints.  White flirted with a triple-double in the win, scoring eight points, ripping off seven steals, and dishing out 10 assists, most of which were to Galindo during her remarkable night.

With the win the 8th ranked Lady Saints improve to 4-0 on the season while University of the Southwest dropped to 0-2 in the Pizza Hut Classic.

Seward's road will get a bit tougher in their next outing as they go up against #23 Odessa and #20 Midland in Midland next weekend.
