Big Second Half Pushes #20 Seward Past Coffeyville

Big Second Half Pushes #20 Seward Past Coffeyville

The 5-0 and 20th ranked Seward County Lady Saints found themselves in trouble at the half in Hutchinson as they took on the Coffeyville Red Ravens in the Ambucs Classic in the Salt City as they trailed 42-32 at the break, but a furious start to the second half gave the Lady Saints the lead and they never looked back, outscoring the Ravens 39-19 in the second period to come away with a 71-61 win to improve to 6-0 on the year.

The Lady Saints got on the board first, cashing in a Tamara Seda offensive rebound on their first possession into a Kyndal Davis three to put them on top 3-0. However, Coffeyville quickly answered and the Lady Saints found themselves in chase mode from there on, falling behind 11-5 at the 14:00 before a Brooklyn Artis three ball tied the score back up at 19 with just over 9:00 to go in the first half.  The Red Ravens answered once again to retake the lead and the Lady Saints played from behind until Rebekah Hatchard got a steal and a score with 5:35 to go in the half to give Seward their first lead since the opening seconds of the contest at 30-29.  Just when it looked like things were turning for the gals in green, Coffeyville used a 13-2 run in the final 4:45 of the first half to race back in front and take a 42-32 lead into the halftime break in the Sports Arena.  The Lady Saints had trouble slowing down Coffeyville's attack, allowing the Red Birds to shoot 63% in the period while four first half three's kept Seward close as they were only able to manage eight first half field goals.

Seward remained down double digits after the first 3:30 of the second half as Coffeyville stretched their lead to the largest of the game at 47-36, but after a Lady Saint timeout, Seward flipped their internal switches on and got after the Red Ravens.  In just 3:04 the Lady Saints erased the 11 point Coffeyville lead, getting baskets from four different players during the run to knot the score at 47.  After another Lady Saint defensive stop Artis knifed through traffic in the lane for a three point play to give Seward their first lead of the second half at 50-47 with 12:12 to go.  Seward continued to push, getting a stepback three from Artis to put them up six and finally a pullup from Davis to cap off a 19-0 Lady Saints run to give them their largest lead of the game at 55-47 with 10:07 remaining.  Coffeyville closed the gap to three on two occasions down the stretch, but the Lady Saints finished the game on a 7-0 run, holding the Red Ravens without a point for the final 2:44 to hang on to win 71-61.

The usual tell-tell signs of the results of the game weren't necessarily true in this one as Coffeyville outscored Seward 13-7 on second chance points and 28-14 in points off of turnovers, but the Lady Saints were still able to win by double digits.  Seward shot 51% in the game while holding the Ravens to just 6 second half field goals in the victory.  Seda led the Lady Saints with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win while Artis added 19 and Davis 13.

Seward improves to 6-0 on the year while Coffeyville drops to 4-3 overall.  The Lady Saints road will continue to be a tough one on Saturday as they take on 8-0 and #23 State Fair at 1:30 in the Sports Arena in Hutchinson.
