Seward Sharp In Shellacking of Colby

For one reason or another, Colby has traditionally been a place where Seward County Lady Saint teams have struggled.  That however, was not the case Wednesday night in the Community Building as Seward demolished the struggling host team 84-36 to move to 17-1 on the season.

It was all Lady Saints from the start in this one.  Seward jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Colby four minutes in and extended their lead to 16-2 after back to back finishes from Payton Fleming at the 13:36 mark of the first.  Seward held the Lady Trojans without a field goal for the first 7:22 of the game when Colby finally found the hoop but an 8-2 run after that bucket had the Lady Saints on top 24-6 at the first half media timeout.  Seward continued to pour it on Colby who had no answer for the potent and multifaceted Lady Saint attack.  The gals in green took a 33-11 lead with 4:36 to go in the half as Alana Simon found Kyndal Davis for an easy two and Seward were on top 43-15 as the teams hit the break.

The Lady Saints shot 53% in the first half of play while holding Colby to just 19% shooting.  All nine Seward players scored in the first half, led by Shanise Brooks who had 10 for the Lady Saints.

The second half didn't start quite as quick for the Lady Saints, but still, a 10-5 run to begin the period had them in front 53-20 six minutes into second half action.  The Lady Saints paraded to the free throw line early in the second half but actually didn't get their second field goal of the half until Fabiana Monte drove to the basket and scored with 10:45 left to make it a 58-20 game.  Another Monte bucket later on in the half had Seward in front 70-24 and the Lady Saints finished strong, pulling away late to win it 84-36.

Brooks had a monster game for the Lady Saints, scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in her second double-double in as many years in Colby.  Fleming continued her recent resurgence, scoring a season high 16 points while Korina Chapman added 13 for the Lady Saints.

Seward improves to 17-1 on the season with the victory and moves to 2-0 in Jayhawk West early action while Colby continues their miserable 2013-2014 campaign, falling to 2-16 and 0-2 in conference play.

The Lady Saints win sets up a big matchup Saturday night in the Greenhouse as #3 and 16-0 Hutchinson comes to town for a key early season conference tilt.  The game will tip at 6:00 with free tickets courtesy of our buyout sponsor Bank of Beaver City, at their Liberal location as well as at Pizza Hut and the North Hutch's C store.
