Lady Saints drop twin bill to Grizzlies

EL DORADO, Kan. – Offensive woes plagued the Seward County Community College softball team in its doubleheader loss at Butler Community College, 10-2 and 4-2, on Saturday. The Lady Saints fell to 12-12 in the Jayhawk West and 16-29 overall.

GAME ONE

Seward tried to stay close, but a four-run inning was too much to overcome in a run-rule, opening game loss.

Butler jumped out early with a three-run first inning, but Seward cut the margin to 3-1 in the top of the second when an error allowed Jordan Cordrey to score. It was all Grizzlies after that. After scoring a run in the second, Butler opened an 8-1 lead with four runs in the fourth inning.

The Lady Saints added a run in the top of the fifth, but the Grizzlies ended the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning for the run-rule win at 10-2.

Miranda Nester had two of Seward's six hits. Jaci Oakley, Emily Mojica, Alyssah Pontoja and Cordrey had the other hits for the Lady Saints.

Cordrey took the loss in the start, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits, striking out three, walking four and giving up a homer over 4 1/3 innings.

GAME TWO

Seward could not avoid the big inning and gave up the lead in the game two loss.

The Lady Saints took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Emily Mojica and Cassandra Esquibel started the inning off with singles. One out later, Alyssah Pontoja's groundout scored Mojica and Nicole Nelson followed with a single to drive home Esquibel.

Seward held the advantage until the bottom of the fourth inning when Butler scored four times to take a 4-2 lead. That would be plenty as the Lady Saints failed to do any more damage despite outhitting the Grizzlies, 8-6.

Pontoja suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out two, walking three and giving up a home run over six innings.

Oakley and Esquibel each had a pair of hits for the Lady Saints.
