Lady Saints split one-run games with Broncbusters

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball split a doubleheader at Garden City Community College, taking the first game, 5-4, but dropping the second, 4-3, on Wednesday. The Lady Saints are 12-10 in the Jayhawk West and 16-27 overall.

 

GAME ONE

Seward jumped out to an early lead and held on for the victory in the opener.

The Lady Saints got on the board first with three runs in the top of the third inning. Nicole Nelson led off with a triple and scored on a Miranda Nester double. After Nissy Lechuga reached base on an error, Jaci Oakley followed with a two-run double to give Seward a 3-0 advantage.

Garden City cut the deficit to one at 3-2 after scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings, but Seward regained its three-run lead at 5-2 in the fifth on a Madeline Owen RBI double and an Emily Mojica run-scoring groundout.

The Broncbusters answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to get back to within one run again at 5-4, but could not score again.

Jordan Cordrey posted the win, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, striking out six, walking one and surrendering a homer, over seven innings.

 

GAME TWO

Seward squandered an early lead and gave up runs late in the game two defeat.

The Lady Saints took a 3-0 lead on single runs in the first, second and fourth innings. Emily Mojica had an RBI single, Miranda Nester had a run-scoring double and a Garden City error allowed a run to score to account for Seward's three runs.

Garden City scored in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 3-1 and took the lead with a three-run sixth at 4-3. Seward failed to score in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Alyssah Pontoja took the loss, yielding four runs, three earned, on nine hits and allowed a homer, over six innings.

Nester had three of Seward's six hits. Jaci Oakley, Jordan Cordrey and Mojica had the other three hits.
