Lady Saints drop two at Conquistadors

DODGE CITY, Kan.  – The Seward County Community College softball team was swept in a doubleheader loss to Dodge City Community College, 9-3 and 12-4, on Sunday at Legends Park.

The Lady Saints, who are 8-8 in conference play, are in midst of a grueling stretch where they are playing eight games in five days. They played back-to-back doubleheaders this past weekend on Saturday and Sunday against Garden City and Dodge City and then on Tuesday and Wednesday against Garden City and Colby.

So far Seward has split the first four games of the stretch, sweeping Garden on Saturday and getting swept by Dodge on Sunday.

GAME ONE

Seward was down early and battled back, but could not finish the rally in the game one loss.

The Lady Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Nissy Lechuga's RBI single, but the Conquistadors struck for four runs in the second to take a 4-1 advantage. Seward was quiet until the fifth inning when it scored two runs on a single by Miranda Nester to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Lady Saints could get no closer as the Conquistadors scored a single run in the fifth inning and iced the game with a four-run, sixth to cap the scoring at 9-3.

Nester had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, for Seward, which managed only five hits. Jaci Oakley, Cassandra Esquibel and Lechuga recorded the only other hits.

Jordan Cordrey took the loss, going six innings, giving up nine runs, six earned, on nine hits, striking out five and walking three.

GAME TWO

Seward was in a big hole early and could not recover in a run-rule defeat in the second game.

The Lady Saints trailed 3-0 after the first inning, but got on the board in the top of the second when Emily Mojica homered to cut the lead to 3-1. The Conquistadors answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to open a 7-1 advantage.

After a scoreless third inning, Seward tried to get back into the game with a three-run fourth inning. Mojica and Madeline Owen hit back-to-back homers and AJ Luna had an RBI single to whittle the margin to 7-4.

Seward could not hold the Dodge City offense as the Conquistadors scored a run in the fourth and added four runs in the fifth to end the game on a run-rule.

Alyssah Pontoja took the loss, allowing 12 runs, seven earned, on 13 hits, striking out one and walking one over 4 1/3 innings for Seward, which committed five errors.
