Lady Saints Fall Short of Upset in El Dorado

Lady Saints Fall Short of Upset in El Dorado

EL DORADO, Kan. – It was a tough day at the ball park for the Seward County softball team (34-18, 21-15) getting swept by the Butler Grizzlies.  The Lady Saints were no hit in game one 9-0 before losing on a walk off in game two 4-3.

GAME ONE RECAP

Monique Ashley (24-5) had perhaps her toughest outing of her career, pitching just four innings, losing from the run-rule.  She gave up nine runs off nine hits, while striking out six batters.

The Lady Saints didn't manage a hit in the game, while striking out 10 times.  Sydney Epp was the lone batter to not strike out.  Epp was also the only base runner for Seward in the game.

Butler jumped out to an early five run lead in the bottom of the first.  After a leadoff walk, a sac bunt forced an errant throw to first by Ashley, leading to the first score of the game. Another bunt made it 2-0.  After a stolen base, a single pushed the base runner to third for a sac fly. Before a two-run homer ended the scoring to make it 5-0.

The Grizzlies used another big inning in the third to put the pressure on the Lady Saints to keep from getting run-ruled. An RBI double down the left field line pushed the first run of the inning across the floor. Three singles score three more runs to make it 9-0.

GAME TWO RECAP

Jordan Cordrey (10-10) barely lost what would have been her biggest win of her young career, losing on a walk off to the ranked Butler team.  She went 6.1 innings, giving up four runs off nine hits.

Seward came away with four hits on the day with three of them being home runs.  Jullian Atteberry, Sage Harrison and Corrina Porras each went yard in the game.  Harrison's home run marked her 20th of the season, braking the Seward County single-season home run record.

The scoring didn't start until the third with the Grizzlies hitting a solo jack in the bottom of the third.

Seward took the took in the top of the fourth with two solo bombs from Atteberry and Harrison. Porras homered to left field in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.

Butler cut the Seward lead to one with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

After the Lady Saints side was retired in the top of the seventh, Seward committed an error to start the final inning. After a sac bunt, a single to center field scored the tying run for the Grizzlies.  A double with the next at bat won the game in walk off fashion for the Grizzlies, 4-3.

Seward will finish the regular season at Colby at 2 p.m. on Thursday with a double header against the Trojans.
