SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Seward County softball team (19-13) ended their Arizona spring break trip with two wins over the Fighting Artichokes of Scottsdale, winning the first game in a pitching duel, 3-1, before out-hitting Scottsdale in game two 19-11.
GAME ONE RECAP
The pitching was strong on both sides, but Monique Ashley (14-3) had more juice in the circle, striking out 19 batters in her seven innings pitched. The 19 strikeouts ties the Seward record for most strikeouts in a single game.
The Lady Saints snagged a late lead and defeated Scottsdale 3-1 on Friday. The game was tied at one with Seward Saints batting in the top of the fifth when Sage Harrison hit a solo homer.
Scottsdale fired up the offense in the first inning when McKenna Adams hit a solo homer.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady Saints tied things up at one. Madeline Owen hit a solo homer.
Kami Shull took the loss for Scottsdale. She surrendered one run on six hits over three innings, striking out one.
Seward saw the ball well today, racking up ten hits in the game. Sydney Epp and Harrison both managed multiple hits for the Lady Saints to lead Seward in hits.
GAME TWO RECAP
Jordan Cordrey (5-6) picked up the win in game two. She surrendered 11 runs on 15 hits over seven innings, striking out three.
Miranda Nester had the hot hand on Friday, tallying four hits and leading Seward to a 19-11 victory over Scottsdale. Nester singled in the second, singled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth, and doubled in the seventh.
Scottsdale scored eight runs in the third inning, but Seward still managed to pull out the victory thanks to a big second inning. Seward Saints put up six runs in the second inning. Kaitlin Ammermann, Leena Mortensen, Madeline Owen, and Nester all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
The Lady Saints opened up scoring in the first inning. Sage Harrison singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
Jenika Smith took the loss for Scottsdale. She allowed nine hits and ten runs over three innings.
The Lady Saints racked up 20 hits. Nester, Ammermann, Sydney Epp, Jullian Atteberry, Mortensen, Corrina Porras, and Owen all had multiple hits for Seward Saints. Nester went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Seward in hits.
