Lady Saints Struggle On Opening Day 2016

Lady Saints Struggle On Opening Day 2016

It wasn't exactly the start the Seward County Lady Saints Softball team wanted to get off to on Friday in the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas as they kicked off their 2016 campaign.  Seward was shutout 6-0 in their first game against Bossier Parish before having the run rule put on them by North Central Texas and Seminole State in their next two games to finish the day 0-3.

The day didn't get started off well for the Lady Saints who just two batters into their first game against Bossier Parish, trailed 1-0.  The Cavs added another run later in the inning and before Seward had a chance to bat in 2016, they were already down 2-0.  Bossier Parish added another run in the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead, but the Lady Saints had a golden opportunity to get back into the game in their half of the inning, loading the bases with one out, but they were unable to push anything across and remained down 3-0 into the 3rd.  Seward's defense crumbled in the 3rd, allowing two more Cav runs to score to make it 5-0 and the Lady Saints offense never threatened again as Bossier Parish added an  insurance run in the 7th before going on to win 6-0.

Venice Batts was the lone bright spot for Seward offensively, finishing 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles in her Lady Saints debut. Jaidyn Mawhinney went the distance in the circle, taking the loss as she allowed 6 runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out two.

Seward looked to get things going in their second game of the day as they took on North Central Texas.  The Lady Lions got the scoring going in the 2nd inning, as Ashley Nichols blasted a two run home run to quickly put North Central up 2-0.  The Lady Saints had a chance to answer in their next at bats, loading the bases with one out, but back to back pop ups ended their threat as they remained behind by a pair into the 3rd.  North Central took advantage of their momentum in their half of the 3rd, scoring four more times, blowing the game open to 6-0.  Seward finally scored their first run of 2016 in the 4th inning of their second game as Yolanda Corral singled home a run to cut the Lion lead to 6-1.  But North Central answered right back in a big way, scoring five times in the bottom of the 4th to go in front of the reeling Lady Saints 11-1.  Needing three runs to keep the game going, Seward never threatened in their final at bats, going down 1-2-3 to force the run rule as North Central Texas won it 11-1 in five.

For the second straight game, the Lady Saints managed just 6 hits in the loss.  Hannah Lopez led the way this time with a 2 for 3 game.  Alexis Cuellar took the loss in the circle for Seward, allowing 6 runs on 4 hits in 3 innings of work, dropping her first collegiate decision at 0-1.

Things wouldn't get any easier for the Lady Saints in their final game of the day as they took on #14 and perennial NJCAA power Seminole State.  The Lady Saints weren't intimidated early on, scoring twice in their half of the 1st inning to take their first lead of the season at 2-0.  Seminole came back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 1st, but the Lady Saints matched that with a tally in the top of the 2nd as Callie Silvers-Harnly singled home a run to make it 3-1 Seward.  The Lady Saints joy wouldn't last long as Seminole sent 13 batters to the plate in a 9 run 2nd inning to put the Lady Trojans in front 10-3.  Seminole added two more in the 3rd to make it a 12-3 ballgame and Seward couldn't keep the game going, scoring a long run in the 5th as the run rule was once again enacted in a 12-4 Seminole State win in five.

The Lady Saints were outhit 11-7 in the loss, despite getting hits from 7 of 9 starters in the contest.  Cuellar was hit hard, allowing 8 runs on 6 hits in just 1 1/3 of work to take the loss and fall to 0-2 on the year.
