#4 Bears Maul Lady Saints in Phoenix

#4 Bears Maul Lady Saints in Phoenix

It will be back to the drawing board for the Seward County Lady Saints on Monday as Friday they finished their 2015 Spring Break trip to Arizona with a pair of losses to DII #4 Phoenix College to send them back to Liberal with four straight losses in tow.

In the opener of their doubleheader with the Bears, Seward was able to threaten in their first two at bats, putting a runner at third in the 1st and one at second in the 2nd, but left both runners stranded at innings end.

Seward starting pitcher Alexa O'Brien kept the game scoreless though, striking out three through her first two innings of work to send the game to the 3rd with the score 0-0.

In the Lady Saints 3rd they once again put a runner into scoring position without being able to score her and it would cost them in the bottom half of the inning as Phoenix got a one out double to score the game's first run and a three run home run behind that to open up at 4-0 lead on Seward.

Seward had a golden opportunity to get back into the game in the 5th as Joe Ann Rapoza doubled to start the inning and Danielle Orr walked behind her and both advanced up 60 feet to put runners on second and third with nobody out in the inning.  A strikeout looking followed by a double play squelched the Lady Saints threat and they remained without a run and down 4-0.

The Lady Saints finally broke through in the 6th, using a Phoenix error and a one out triple from Grace Petersen to plate their first run to make it 4-1, but they were unable to get anything else as another double play killed their rally and that would be it for them as they went down in order in their final at bats in the 7th to fall 4-1.

Seward managed just 3 hits in the loss.  Petersen was 1 for 3 with an RBI while Rapoza was 1 for 2 with a double and a stolen base.  O'Brien took the loss despite holding Phoenix scoreless in five of six innings in the game.  She allowed 6 hits and 4 runs while striking out 5 to drop to 8-6 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/DII #4 PHOENIX GAME ONE BOX SCORE

In game two the Lady Saints had another chance to strike early as Kolby Hamilton walked with two outs in the 1st and Petersen doubled, but Hamilton was gunned down trying to score on the play to keep Seward off the board.

In Phoenix's first at bats, the Bears used a Seward error to get them going and with one out in the inning Marissa Leonard cranked a two run home run to put them up 2-0 early.

Seward got a run back in the top half of the 2nd inning as Tiffany Bolanos launched her first  home run of the year, a solo shot, to make it a 2-1 game.

Both sides were quiet from there as Lady Saints starter Jaclyn Wagner kept the Bears in check, but the Seward offense couldn't get anything going as it remained a 2-1 game all the way to the 6th

The Lady Saints got a leadoff double in the 6th from Jaidyn Mawhinney, but once again, they couldn't get the run in as the middle of the Seward lineup popped up twice with Mawhinney on third and she would be stranded there to keep the Lady Saints down by one.

A Phoenix single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Bears in the bottom of the 6th and that is when all heck broke loose for the Lady Saints.  A wild pitch scored the Bears first run of the inning and a single scored the next to make it 4-1.  A single followed by two Seward County errors on the next play resembled a snow ball fight by the Lady Saints in the middle of the desert as Phoenix got two more runs on the play to extend their lead to 6-1.  Another Seward defensive miscue made it a 7-1 contest and three pitches later a two run home run ended the game in a run rule as Phoenix won it 9-1.

It was another rough go of things for the Lady Saints offensively in the loss as Seward mounted just 4 hits in the loss, 2 coming off the bat of Mawhinney at the top of the lineup.  Seward's defense committed 6 errors in the defeat, their second most in a game all season.  Wagner was tagged for the loss, allowing 7 hits and 9 runs, 4 earned in 5 2/3 innings of work.  The sophomore walked 4 and struck out 4 as she fell to 9-5 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/DII #4 PHOENIX GAME TWO BOX SCORE

The Lady Saints drop their third and fourth straight games to fall to 17-13 on the year while Phoenix improves to 28-4 as they win their 11th and 12th games in a row.  Seward will return to action on Tuesday at home against Colby as they get back into Jayhawk West Conference play with a 3:00 doubleheader.
