Seward Starts Spring Break Trip With Sweep

Seward County freshman Jaidyn Mawhinney got things going at the top of the Lady Saints lineup early and often Tuesday in Glendale, Arizona, picking up six hits in a doubleheader with Glendale, leading the way for the Lady Saints to sweep the Gauchos 11-2 and 7-3 to improve to 17-9 on the year.

Mawhinney's big day got started just three pitches into game one where she singled and would later score on an RBI single from Danielle Orr to give Seward the early 1-0 lead on Glendale.

Seward blew the game open early in the 2nd and once again it was Mawhinney getting the job done, this time in the way of a two RBI single to put the Lady Saints up 4-0.  They continued their onslaught of Gaucho pitching as Grace Petersen and Danielle Orr smacked back to back doubles to score two more runs and Orr scored herself on an RBI hit from catcher Vanessa Oakden to make it a 7-0 game in favor of the gals in green.

Mawhinney singled once again to start the 4th inning for the Lady Saints and it was the quarter in the merry go round for Seward as the Lady Saints would score four times in the inning, highlighted by RBI knocks from Petersen and Hannah Clark to take an 11-0 lead.

Glendale finally got on the board in the 5th inning, but it was too little too late as with Seward leading 11-2 at innings end, the run rule kicked in and the Lady Saints took home the win in the opener of the doubleheader.

Seward slugged out 14 hits in the win while Glendale managed just 4.  Mawhinney was a perfect 3 for 3 atop the Seward lineup and scored 3 times while driving in a pair.  Petersen also had 3 hits and 2 RBI's for the Lady Saints while Orr was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's.  Alexa O'Brien went the distance in the circle for the Lady Saints, allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 6 to improve to 8-4 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/GLENDALE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Mawhinney once again singled to start the game for the Lady Saints in game two of the twinbill, unfortunately for Seward she didn't score this time and the Lady Saints actually found themselves behind after an inning as Glendale scored twice in the 1st to take a 2-0 lead.

Seward struck back in the 3rd, getting RBI singles from Kolby Hamilton and Petersen to tie the game up at 2.

Lady Saints starter Jaclyn Wagner settled in on the mound from there, breezing through the Glendale order 1-2-3 in the 2nd and 3rd innings to keep it a 2-2 game.

Seward rewarded her with some more offense in the top half of the 4th inning as Tiffany Bolanos drove home the go ahead run with a single and Mawhinney followed that up with an RBI single of her own to make it a 4-2 game.  The Lady Saints continued to swing the bat well, getting two out single from Petersen to score Bolanos and at the end of four it was Seward 5 and Glendale 2.

Glendale put runners on with two outs in both the 5th and 6th innings without being able to push anything across while the Lady Saints had two baserunners in their half of the 6th without success in scoring to keep it a 5-2 game into the 7th

Back to back doubles from Orr and Oakden plated the Lady Saints sixth run of the game and Oakden scored on an RBI single from Clark to add another insurance run to make it 7-2.

Glendale finally got back into the scoring column in the bottom of the 7th, but they managed just a single tally against Wagner as Seward shut it down from there to hang on to win 7-3 to sweep the doubleheader.

Once again, the Lady Saints had little trouble mounting success on the offensive side of the ball, slugging out 15 hits in the victory including at least one from eight of nine starters . Mawhinney led the assault at the top of the lineup again with 3 hits and an RBI while Bolanos had the same at the bottom of the order.  Wagner improved to 9-3 on the year, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, just one earned, while striking out 6 for the Lady Saints in the circle.
