Nery to continue tennis career at DII University of West Florida

LIBERAL, Kan. -- Seward County Community College tennis player Gabriel Nery has signed with Division II University of West Florida.

It has been a long road back for Nery, who has battled injuries while as a Saint. In his freshman season of 2016-17, despite suffering several injuries, Nery managed to capture a Region VI title at No. 2 doubles and finished fifth at the No. 2 doubles spot in the NJCAA National Tournament. The injuries finally took its toll on Nery, who was sidelined for the 2017-18 season.

But after lots of hard work and determination, Nery was back with a vengeance and returned to the Saints lineup to make a huge splash in the fall of 2018. For only the third time in school history, Nery and Sander Jans won the ITA JUCO Doubles Championship. Nery followed that up in the spring by winning two more Region VI titles at the No. 5 spot in singles and the No. 1 spot in doubles. He also finished in third place at No. 5 singles and fifth place in No. 1 doubles in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Nery ended his career at Seward as an ITA Doubles All-American, with a combined record of 22-13 in singles and 34-16 in doubles.

Nery will join an Argonauts squad that competes in the Gulf South Conference and went 14-5 last season.
