Saurombe/Casares Secure At Large Bid to ITA Nationals

Saurombe/Casares Secure At Large Bid to ITA Nationals

Just two short days after thinking his chance at defending his 2013 ITA National Championship in doubles was over, Seward County sophomore Ronzai Saurombe learned that he and his partner Felipe Casares have been named as one of two at-large selections to compete in the 2014 ITA National Tournament in Sumter, South Carolina next week.

Saurombe and Casares looked like they had the automatic bid to the tournament in the palms of their hands last weekend as they competed at the ITA Regional Tournament in Oklahoma City, but after winning the first set 6-3 and grabbing an early lead in the second against a pair from Seminole State, the Saints duo struggled.  They went on to lose the second set 6-2 and the Trojans put the same score on them in the third to end their tournament as runners-up.

Saurombe and Casares don't have much experience playing together to fall back on as they have played just three official matches together, and are expected to get three more under their belts this weekend at the New Mexico Military Invitational, before hitting the court in South Carolina together at the National Tournament.

The pair will join Lady Saints Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos at the tournament after the Argentinians captured the ITA Regional Championship last weekend in doubles and enter the National Tournament as the #1 seed.
