Saints Just Miss Upset Bid Against #4 Seminole

The #20 Seward County Saints just missed an upset of #4 Seminole State Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City, winning all four singles matches played, but losing both doubles battles and forfeiting the other three spots in a 5-4 loss to the Trojans to fall to 1-3 on the year.

Despite playing without their 7th ranked doubles team, Seminole was able to capture a shocking win at #1 doubles when Alex Brown and Ryan Bridges upset the Saints #1 ranked duo of Ronzai Saurombe and Alejandro Gonzalez 8-2 to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.  The Saints didn't have any better luck at #2 doubles as Seward's Trevor Kipping and Colin Glassman fell 8-2 to Mitch Vechione and Drew Forsyth to put the Trojans up 2-0.  Unfortunately for Seward, having to forfeit three spots, that was the match for the Saints as Seminole took a 5-0 lead.

The Saints kept playing though and #41 Gonzalez picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Forsyth in his first #1 action of the season.  In #2 singles it was Saurombe all over Brown for Seminole, defeating him 6-0 in the first set before Brown retired down 3-0 in the second.  In #3 singles Kipping won 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets over Vechione and Glassman picked up his first win of the spring at #4 singles with a  6-1, 6-4 drubbing of Brady Mathews to make the final score look close at 5-4.

The Saints fall to 1-3 on the year with the loss and their individual match record sits at 16-20 overall despite a 16-8 mark in matches played.

Seward will continue their Midwest swing on Friday as they compete in the Trojan Dual Match Classic, taking on #5 Collin County to open things at 9:00, followed by a matchup against Seminole State or Barton in the second round of the tournament later Friday afternoon.
