Saints Earn Hard Fought Win Over Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Seward County men's basketball team held on for a hard-fought victory Wednesday night, defeating Dodge City 70-64. The win snapped a four-game losing streak against the Conquistadors.

Sophomore Terrell Alfred led the Saints with 15 points.  Mohamed Selmi (14 pts), Devin Bethely (12 pts) and Jordan Mitchell (10 pts) joined Alfred in double-figures.  Isiah Small finished two points shy of a third straight double-double, collecting 10 rebounds.  Selmi finished one rebound shy of collecting his first career double-double.

Seward County (11-5, 7-5) shot 43.8 percent (28 of 64) from the floor and 38.9 percent (7 of 18) from behind the arc.  The Saints held Dodge City to 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field and 20.0 percent (4 of 20) from deep. As has been the case for much of the year, the Seward County bench played a vital role in the win, outscoring the Dodge City bench 41-23.

Seward used a 13-2 run out of the gate to game a sizable lead on Dodge. However, the Conqs were able to cut the lead to five just before the media.  Coming out of the media timeout, Dodge went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-16 lead over the Saints. Seward quickly took back over, regaining the lead and taking a four-point lead into the break, by a score of 30-26.

The Saints started the second half on a 10-3 run to push their lead to 12 points, but just as the first half went, the Conqs came storming back.  Dodge City came within a single possession multiple times late in the game, but Alfred had an answer every time, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including a clutch three that put the Saints up six with just over a minute left.  Seward held on to that lead, winning 70-64.

The Saints will return to the Greenhouse on January 13 to take on the Garden City Broncbusters at 8:00 p.m. The game will be free for all fans thanks to our sponsor First National Bank.  Free tickets can be picked up at any of the four First National Bank locations or at the Love's Travel Shop.
