Saints Jet Past Peterson Air Force to Improve to 3-0

The Seward County Saints continued their aerial acrobatics Friday night against a team that is use to that, at a little bit higher level, Peterson Air Force Base, flying past the Knights 109-53 to improve to 3-0 on the 2015-2016 season.

The Saints wasted no time in letting the Knights know who would own this night as they blazed out to a 10-2 lead after just three minutes thanks in large part to eight early points from Mitchell Packard.  Seward continued their assault on Peterson, extending their lead to 18-4 on a transition bucket from James Byrd.  As expected, Peterson wasn't ready to roll over just yet, closing the Saints lead to just seven by the first half media timeout.  That's when freshman Charles Beauregard caught fire for Seward.  The boisterous guard popped back to back threes in front of his home crowd and then continued his hot streak, converting an old fashioned three point play to extend the Saints lead to 33-19 at the 7:00 mark.  The Saints had a steady march to the free throw line for the next few minutes, pushing their lead all the way to 42-22 before Beauregard came back into the game with a bang, splashing home a pullup three to make it a 45-22 game.  By the end of the first half it was all Saints with the guys in green taking a commanding 57-28 lead to the locker room at the break.

Beauregard and Niem Stevenson outscored the Knights by themselves 29-28 in the first 20 minutes of action as Beauregard poured in 17 and Stevenson 12 despite playing just 13 minutes each in the half.  Seward shot 62% from the field in the half and hit on 6 of 12 three point attempts.  Peterson Air Force made 40% of their first half field goal attempts but failed to connect from downtown in the period and turned the ball over 17 times leading to 26 Seward County points in the half.

The Saints didn't let up as the second half got underway, getting a pair of slam dunks from Stevenson to excite the crowd and another longball from Beauregard, his fifth of the night to make it 66-32 just three minutes in.  Five straight points from Jeromie Simmons later on and a jumper from Delano Jones made it a 77-38 game in favor of the Saints and at the media stoppage of the second half it was 90-43 Seward County.  The Saints cruised past the century mark on a pair of free throws from Simmons with over 5:00 left before coasting to a 109-53 win in front of their home fans.

Beauregard and Stevenson combined for 50 for Seward in the win, shooting a combined 76% from the field, 19-25 together on the night.  Also reaching double figures for the Saints was Packard with 11 and Kris Williams who finished with 10 points and a team best seven rebounds.  Bryd flirted with his first career double-double, scoring eight points and dishing out nine assists in the win.  Peterson shot just 35% in the loss and turned the ball over 24 times turning into 38 Seward County points on the night.

The Saints improve to 3-0 on the year with the win, matching their win total from their first eight games of last season.

Seward will have their stiffest test of the early season on Saturday night at 8:00 when they take on Sunrise Christian, a prep school out of Wichita already with a win over fellow Jayhawk member Pratt on the season.
