Big Second Half Leads 'Los Santos' to Win

Big Second Half Leads 'Los Santos' to Win

A slow start but a furious finish for the Seward County 'Los Santos' led them to an 86-67 win over the Oklahoma Outlaws Saturday night on Hispanic Heritage Night in the Greenhouse.  Seward managed just 32 first half points and were tied with the Outlaws at the break, but erupted for 54 second half points to pull their way back to the .500 mark for the first time this season.

The Saints were active on the defensive end of the floor once again early on, holding the Outlaws to just one field goal in the first 8:00 of the game to jump out to a 10-3 advantage.  After that though, it was a 7-0 run for Oklahoma to tie the game and the teams traded points to 24-23 with an Outlaw three pointer gave Oklahoma their first lead of the night at 26-24 with 3:23 to go in the half.  Seward rebounded to tie things up, but couldn't get in a flow in the final three minutes and managed just a tie at the break against the Outlaws as the score was knotted at 32.

A couple of halftime tweaks got the Saints going as the second half began and just minutes into the period, Seward had built a six point advantage at 46-40.  It remained a six point game midway through the second half, but back to back three point plays for Seward from Derek Dorn and Evan Allen quickly put the Saints on top by double digits at 62-50.  Up by 13 three minutes later, two straight old fashioned three point plays for Tykwan Garner on the inside put Seward on top by 19 and that was just about all she wrote for the Outlaws.  Oklahoma didn't make another run at the Saints and Seward cruised to the finish line, winning 86-67 to get to the .500 mark on the year.

Oklahoma's defense provided the Saints with little resistance in the win as Seward shot 52% in the game and 64% in the second half.  Kevin Sims and Secean Johnson each scored 17 for the Saints while Jamal Poplar added 14 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.

The Saints draw back to an even 6-6 on the year with the victory and will have a chance to take their record above .500 for the first time this season on Wednesday as they host Pure Prep at 7:00 in the Greenhouse to wrap up their non-conference schedule in 2014.
