DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Seward County Community College baseball team opened its final regular season series with a split at Dodge City Community College, losing the opener, 10-0, in five innings and winning the nightcap, 10-8, in 11 innings.
The Saints are 13-17 in the Jayhawk West and 26-27 overall, winning 10 of their last 14 games. Seward wraps up the series with Dodge City on Saturday at Brent Gould Field with Sophomore Day. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and admission is free.
GAME ONE
The Saints were stymied on offense and suffered a 10-0 shutout loss to the Conquistadors in the opener.
Dodge City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, padded the lead with a six-run fourth and added the final run in the fifth to cap a 10-0 run-rule win.
Seward recorded its first and only hit of the game in the fifth inning on Blaine Chancy's one-out single.
GAME TWO
The Seward bats came alive late in the game and relief pitching held the Dodge City bats at bay as the Saints rallied to a 10-8 triumph in 11 innings in the second game.
The Saints trailed 8-3 before scoring two runs in the eighth inning and three runs in the ninth, tying the game and sending it into extra innings. Seward broke through in the 11th inning and snapped the deadlock. The inning started with runners on first and second when Nathan Hopkins singled and Kotaro Wakui was hit by a pitch. After Hayden Ramage flied out, Ryan Todd was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brooks Barber singled in Hopkins to give Seward the lead and Blaine Chancy followed with a sacrifice fly for an insurance run.
John Langehening pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Langehening and Cross Durham combined for a three-hitter over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
The Conquistadors struck first with two runs in the first inning, but the Saints answered back to take the advantage with three runs in the second. Dodge City tallied six runs in the sixth inning to open an 8-3 lead, then it was Seward the rest of the way.
Hopkins went 4-for-5 with three RBI, Todd added three hits and Colton Rowan and Chancy each drove in two runs to power the Saints.
