Seward County Saints Split double header with Redlands CC

WOODWARD, Okla. – The Seward County baseball team split with Redlands Community College with the Saints winning game one 9-8 and losing 11-12 in the second.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Saints used only two pitchers in game one. Tanner King started on the mound pitching 4.7 innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits, striking out six and walking zero. Ryan Thomas threw 2.3 innings in relief out of the bullpen. Thomas recorded the last seven outs to earn the save for Seward County Saints. King would earn the win.

Seward County came away with  nine runs on 12 hits. Cole Bergdall, Jose Caraballo, and Spencer Sackett each racked up multiple hits for the Saints. Bergdall went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Seward in hits.

The Saints were on the board first in the first inning with Cole Bergdall with a line drive double to center field scoring two and Joseph Kuhn with a single on a line drive to center field as well. Starting off with a 3-0 lead just wasn't enough.

The Cougars came back capitalizing on the Saints errors scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Lynch hit a fly ball and reached on an error by center fielder Austin Tidwell. Lynch advances to 2nd. Xavier De Leon scores. Then Michael Oyervides doubles and finally Nate Williams hits a ground ball and reaches on an error by third baseman Braxton Allen. Oyervides scores.

Allen then comes back and hits a single on a hard ground ball to center field the advanced to second on the throw. Jose Caraballo scores making it a tie game, 4-4 going into the bottom of the second where no runs are scored by the Cougars.

Top of the fourth and the Saints heat back up. With already two outs, Bergdall singles scoring one, Sackett doubles scoring another one, Sackett then scores on a pass ball, and finally Dylan Paul hits a ground ball and reaches on an error by second baseman Williams scoring their fourth run of the inning and just like that it's 8-4.

Redlands only score on run in the bottom of the fourth on a single hit by Tyler Hawk. Top of the fifth and Caraballo hits a high fly bomb out left field scoring another run for the Saints making it a 9-5 game.

Bottom of the fifth and the Cougars went on a run where Luke Ball singles on a ground ball to left fielder scoring one, Joshua Detweiler doubles on a line drive to left field scoring another and Detweiler scores on error by right fielder Paul. They brought the game to 9-8 where the score stands and Saints pitcher Thomas holds off the Cougars for the rest of the game.

GAME TWO RECAP

Despite a 9-run deficit in the third inning, Seward County Saints almost came all the way back, but eventually falling 12-11 to Redlands Community College. The Saints  put up 11 runs in the failed comeback. Bergdall, Sackett, Paul, Allen, and Cayde Ward came through with RBIs to lead the rally.

The Saints used a full rotation of pitchers totaling five Saints that got on the mound on the day with Cole Evans earning the start. Evans lasted two innings, allowing five hits and eight runs while striking out three.

Brayden Conner (1.0 IP), allowing 3 hits and 3 runs, Jacob Nielsen (1.0 IP), allowing one hit and zero runs, Braeden Gould (1.0 IP), allowing two hits and zero runs, and  Jordan Pepper (1.0 IP), allowing one hit and zero runs. Evans took the loss for Seward.

Seward trains early as the Cougars started off with a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Williams, Keyshaun Smith, Oyervides, and Cole Mason all drive in run for Redlands. Bottom of the second and the Cougars add to their lead with a two run home run by Hawk making it 0-7.

Saints continue to be unable to get on base. Redlands, in the bottom of the third add again to their lead with a single by Mason scoring one and a double by Austin Dahlenburg scoring another. The Saints then trail 0-9.  

Finally in the top of the fifth inning, the Saints are on the board with Bergdall with a single scoring Montana Newel and Cruz Shope scores on the overthrow. Sackett and Paul then hit sacrifice flies each scoring one run. The Saints make a small dent on the lead making it a 4-9 game. The Cougars extend their lead one last time scoring three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Seward County scored again, this time four runs in the sixth inning. The Saints big bats in the inning were led by singles by Allen, Sackett, and Ward. Shope also scored on wild pitch. Seward closes the gap again now 8-12.

Top of the seventh and with one more chance to pull ahead, Allen steps up with one out, count 2-1 and Allen hits a three run homerun which is what the Saints needed at the time, but after neither Bergdall or Sackett could capitalize on the last chance momentum and the final score is 11-12.

The Saints next game will be Tuesday, March 13th against Frank Phillips at home. Following that will be their next home conference game on Thursday, March 15th against Colby.
