Saints Buried in First Region VI Matchup

Saints Buried in First Region VI Matchup

The Seward County Saints thoughts of an upset win over the Jayhawk East Champion Cowley Tigers was squelched early on Friday in the first game of a Region VI Tournament three game series, as the Tigers put up crooked numbers in four of their first five offensive innings to roll to a 15-1 win over the Saints, putting Seward in a must win situation with the season on the line in game two Saturday.

Cowley got things going early and often, scoring three times in the bottom half of the 1st inning and twice more in the 3rd to take a 5-0 lead on the Saints.

Seward got on the board for the first time with a double off the center field wall from Cody Stineman in the 4th to make it a 5-1 game, but the Tigers answered right back with four in the bottom half of the frame to open up their lead to 9-1 after four.

The Tigers continued to pour it on against the Seward bullpen in the 5th, scoring six more times to blow the game wide open at 15-1 after five complete.

The Saints couldn't get anything going in the 6th or 7th innings, effectively ending the game in a 15-1 run rule win for Cowley in the opener.

Cowley banged out 15 hits against Saints pitching while Seward finished with eight knocks in the loss.  Brian Tims finished 3 for 3 with the Saints only run scored of the afternoon while Stineman had Seward's only extra base hit in the loss.  Jared Biddy took the loss on the mound as he failed to get out of the 4th inning, allowing seven hits and nine runs to fall to 4-7 on the year.  The Saints bullpen offered little relief as three arms combined to allow eight hits and six runs in just two innings worked to close out the game.

The Saints fall to 17-37 on the year with the loss while Cowley improves to almost an inverse record at 38-16.

Seward and Cowley will hook up once again on Saturday at 2:00 with the Saints season on the line and the Tigers looking to punch their ticket to the Region VI Championships in Wichita next week.
