16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored by NJCAA For Academics

Academic awards from the 2015-2016 school year continued to pour in for Seward County student-athletes on Thursday as 16 Saints and Lady Saints were honored with NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards as announced by the governing body.
63 Saints/Lady Saints Earn Way Onto AD Honor Roll

The 2015-2016 school year proved to be more than just a successful one on the court and in the fields for the Seward County student-athletes as Wednesday it was announced that 63 of 99 student-athletes made their way onto the Spring 2016 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Jakob Hernandez Named NJCAA All-American

Seward County ace Jakob Hernandez capped off his illustrious Saints career with the sports highest honor on Tuesday as the NJCAA announced that the southpaw was a 2016 3rd Team All-American.
Justin Graff-Rowe Signs at Central Missouri

All-Conference Saints outfielder Justin Graff-Rowe signed on the dotted line on Saturday in the All-American room at Seward County, inking with NCAA Division II powerhouse Central Missouri for the final two years of his collegiate career.
Five Saints Garner All-Jayhawk Honors, Hernandez Pitcher of the Year

Five Seward County Saints were named All-Jayhawk West on Tuesday as lefthander Jakob Hernandez was named both the Pitcher of the Year in the league and a 1st Team All-Jayhawk selection, while designated hitter Antonio Dorado was also a 1st Team pick and first baseman Logan Nethercot, shortstop Judah Sweat, and outfielder Justin Graff-Rowe were all 2nd Team selections.

A pair of Seward County sophomores were honored by Region VI on Monday as ace Jakob Hernandez and designated hitter Antonio Dorado were each named to the 2016 NJCAA All-Region VI First Team as voted on by the 19 Jayhawk Conference coaches.

Saints Season Comes to a Close in First Round

Only twice in history have the Seward County Saints had to go on the road for the first round of the Region VI Tournament best of three series. The first two times they did so, they came out victorious. History did not repeat itself this weekend in Overland Park however as the Saints left the bases loaded in the 9th inning of a deciding game three against the Johnson County Cavaliers Sunday afternoon to fall 6-3 and see their 2016 season come to a disappointing end.

In the marquee matchup of the Region VI Tournament first round, the #5 seed from the Jayhawk West, the Seward County Saints, made the long trip to Overland Park to take on the #4 seed from the Jayhawk East, the Johnson County Cavaliers. In game one the Saints gave their ace Jakob Hernandez plenty of support early on and the southpaw did the rest in a 13-5 Seward victory. In game two the Cavaliers took their frustrations out on Saints pitching, grabbing an early lead and scoring eight times against the Seward bullpen in the final two innings to run rule the Saints 15-5 in seven to set up a winner take all game three on Sunday morning.

Saints Slip in Final West Game, Headed on Road For Playoffs

Throughout the course of a season, teams often lose games that they think they shouldn’t have and afterwards mutter the phrase ‘that one is going to come back to get us’. That was the case this season for the Seward County Saints and the latter part came true on the final day of the regular season as the Saints backed themselves into a corner, needing to win their final two games on the road at Dodge City to be at home for the playoffs and were only able to capture one, sending them on the longest trip possible for the first round of the Region VI Tournament next weekend as they are headed to Overland Park to take on Johnson County. Jared Biddy gave the Saints an outstanding effort in the opener Sunday, pitching a complete game shutout against the Conqs in a 3-0 win, but Seward couldn’t hold a late lead in the series finale, falling 6-5 to seal their playoff fate.
Hernandez Sharp, But Saints Split Again

In what has been a season of inconsistencies, two things that have been consistent for the Seward County Saints showed themselves again on Saturday as the Saints took on the Dodge City Conquistadors to kick off their final Jayhawk West Conference series of the 2016 season. In the opener, ace Jakob Hernandez was solid as usual, not allowing a hit past the 2nd inning while striking out 13 in a 4-1 Seward County win. In game two though, the Saints fell short 6-5, splitting their fifth straight and seventh of their past nine conference doubleheaders to put themselves in a must sweep situation to secure home field advantage for the Region VI playoffs next week.
Saints Pound Out 18 Hits in Midweek Win

The Seward County Saints pounded out 18 hits and shook off 16 walks on the mound Wednesday afternoon in Borger, Texas, coming away with a 12-9 non-conference win over Frank Phillips in a tune-up for a big weekend series against Dodge City.
Unlikely Hero Collects Jayhawk Pitcher of the Week Award

One month ago, Seward County sophomore Nic Ricigliano was a third baseman buried on the Saints depth chart, getting an occasional at bat during a meaningless non-conference game. In an incredible change of fate that has seen Ricigliano make the move to the mound over the past few weeks, the Colorado native was named the Jayhawk Conference Pitcher of the Week in a release Wednesday afternoon after a masterful performance against Barton over the weekend.

The Seward County Saints were forced to settle for yet another Jayhawk West Conference split against the Barton Cougars Sunday afternoon at Brent Gould Field in Liberal as the Saints couldn’t hold a 9-6 lead in the final inning of game three, eventually falling 11-9 before a gem on the mound from Nic Ricigliano gave Seward a 10-0 run rule win in the series finale to end the weekend 2-2 against the Cougars.
Big Innings Highlight Seward/Barton Day One Split

Crooked numbers ruled Saturday afternoon as the Seward County Saints and Barton Cougars hooked it up in Jayhawk West Conference Baseball action. The Saints used a six run 3rd in game one to come away with an 11-1 win while Barton put up a nine spot in the 5th of game two to rout Seward 17-12 for the split.
