Many people say that the postseason is a whole different animal and that was most certainly the case as the Seward County Saints and Highland Scotties locked up at Liberal’s Brent Gould Field for the 1st Round of the 2015 Region VI Tournament Saturday afternoon. With two teams going in vastly different directions at regular seasons end, Seward winning 12 straight Jayhawk West games at one point to finish 1st and Highland losing 9 in a row to finish in an 8th place tie, it seemed that the Saints would clean up on their home field, but that most certainly wasn’t the case. Highland came out and took an early 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back. The Saints cut it to a 6-5 game at one point, but the Scotties responded with three runs in the next inning to open their lead back to 9-5 which is the count they would stun Seward by in the opener. Game two was quite another case. The Saints scored six 1st inning runs and seven more in the 2nd to blow the game open 13-0 early and later coasted to a 16-3 run rule victory to force a winner take all game three on Sunday at noon.

In sports coaches cringe when they hear the phrase “you have nothing to play for” but in reality there are days when that is just about the case. With that situation at hand Sunday in Great Bend, the already crowned Jayhawk West Champion Seward County Saints took the field for their final two games of the regular season against the Barton Cougars. Game three of the series was a back and forth battle with Barton getting six runs in the 2nd and the Saints seven in the 4th, but in the end it was the Cougars squeaking out a 10-9 victory over Seward. In the series finale, the Saints offense couldn’t come up with the big hit as they left 12 runners on in a 5-2 loss to wrap up the regular season.

After winning 18 of their past 20 the Saints are now 30-19 and in sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk West Conference standings after a thorough beat down of visiting Butler Monday afternoon at Brent Gould Field in Liberal. In a matchup between two of three teams tied for the conference lead going into the weekend, the Saints clearly showed the Grizzlies who was boss Monday, run ruling them 11-1 in game three of the series and doing it again in the series finale 13-3 to sweep the four game set by a combined score of 45-11.
