Seward County Baseball Strikes First but Fall to New Mexico

Liberal, Kansas – After a series sweep the previous week to give the Seward County Saints a winning record through the first month of the 2024 season, the Saints baseball team made their way over to New Mexico to begin a four-game series against the T-Birds where despite striking first to score the first run of the day, Seward County could not grab a win as they fell 7-1 in game one and 11-1 in game two.

Game one on the day had a good start for Seward County in the top of the first as they scored the first run of the day off a ground out to second by Trenton Rowan as Todd Baffa scored off a wild pitch that allowed the Saints to move in front first 1-0 to start the game. Their lead did not last long as the T-Birds answered back in the bottom of the same inning with three straight runs driven in take a 3-1 lead over SCCC and did not let up through the rest of the game. A home run on a line drive from New Mexico on the second scored another run for the T-Birds while another three scores towards the end of the matchup gave NMJC a 7-1 win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Game two on the day was a rough outing from the start for Seward County as New Mexico jumped in front 2-0 off a homer to left field by the T-Birds before another big it that landed outside of the fences made it 3-0 entering the third. Sergio Castro helped put the Saints on the board with a homer of his own out to right field to make the score 3-1, but seven more scores throughout the game including two more home run bombs forced the run rule 11-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

Saints' baseball now falls to 0-2 in the series against New Mexico and now sit at 9-9 even overall on the 2024 season to start the month of March. They will take the field again tomorrow with the T-Birds in the final two games of the series before returning back home.
